ARCHIVED - Galicia bans gatherings of over 5 people from Thursday
Anti-pandemic measures strengthened as case numbers continue to rise
The Xunta, the regional government of Galicia in the north-west of Spain, has announced that in response to the increase in cases of Covid-19 over the last few weeks a ban is to be imposed on gatherings of more than 5 people, halving the limit of 10 people which was introduced just a week ago.
This applies to all of the region, except for Santiago de Compostela where it is limited to those residing together.
In the last 24 hours 441 new cases have been reported in Galicia, taking the current total of active cases up to 5,457. To date, 836 people have died in Galicia during the pandemic. The region currently has 342 patients hospitalised, with 48 in intensive care and 5,115 patients are in home isolation with mild symptoms.
Of the 27,000 cases so far reported in Galicia, 4,520 were identified between 6th and 19th October, and Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the recently re-elected president of the regional government, announced the new measure on Tuesday after a long meeting with the committee which is advising his administration on how to manage the pandemic. The new limit on gatherings will be published in the official bulletin of the region on Wednesday before coming into force at midnight on Thursday. The regional Government would like to impose the measures for 14 days, although the initial period may be just 7 days and the Government has called for residents to create “bubbles” around their immediate family in order to limit their exposure to the virus.
