ARCHIVED - Roman column discovered following landslip, removed in Monteagudo
The column was exposed following the collapse of a wall during the heavy rains of September 2019
On Thursday the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the site in Monteagudo (the area best known as having the figure of Christ, on top of a Moorish palace, which crowns a huge outcrop of rock, looking out over the huerta orchard areas surrounding Murcia city) where an ornate Roman column was unexpectedly discovered when heavy rains caused a landslip in September last year.
The column was found when part of a retaining wall collapsed in Calle Parra in Monteagudo, the subsequent landslip exposing part of the ornate Roman column.
The column, dating from between the 1st and 2nd centuries, is being carefully removed, a process which required the removal of a significant volume of earth and rubble and the securing of the surrounding structure, the total of which comes in at a price of 13,288.95 euros for the council.
Once the extraction work has concluded, the column will be transferred to the San Cayetano Interpretation Center, located in Monteagudo. (The Visitor Centre is an interesting trip out and explores the vast history of the municipality, with excellent exhibits dating to each period in its history. Click for full information about the centre.)
This little corner of the municipality of Murcia is absolutely packed with history, the strategic location of the outcrop having attracted the attention of every civilisation which has occupied the Murcia region at some point in the past, giving unequalled control of the natural valley and controlling the natural route which runs through from modern-day Alicante province and out along the Andalucian coastline.Remains from every period have been found in Monteagudo, although the Moorish palace which still dominates the landscape today, is its best-known landmark.
The history of the Murcia municipality has been written in 6 parts as there is so much to write about. Part 1, dealing with prehistory and the Bronze Age mentions Monteagudo for the first time and there are links to the other 5 parts from this first article. Click for History of Murcia part 1
