ARCHIVED - Totana Mayor asks for return to school to be delayed in the municipality
The Mayor says health services in the municipality are “overwhelmed”
The mayor of Totana, Juan José Cánovas, has described the epidemiological evolution of the pandemic in recent weeks in Totana as "very worrying", as rising case numbers once again bring the municpality to a critical point.
Totana was the last municipality to come out of the state of emergency and was the first to be re-confined when cases once again resumed an upward trajectory.
Totana currently has the fourth highest rate per 100,000 of population in the region over a 7 day period; 326 cases per 100,00, more than double the regional average. 116 cases have been diagnosed in the last 7 days, and 210 in the last fortnight and the municipality currently has more than double the number of active cases than when it was confined between the end of July and middle of August.
The Mayor said in a press statement on Thursday that he recognizes that the situation in Totana is going to worsen, the current levels of cases causing what he called "a collapse" in the two health centers.
He reported that in the municipality there are around 800 people who require daily health monitoring as a result of the epidemic, of which almost 300 are active cases and 500 are under observation due to suspicion of direct contact with positives; which implies a further evolution, requiring a "superhuman effort" from tracers and healthcare staff.
The Mayor does not want children of the municipality to go back to school next Monday, September 14th, and says that this is the opinion shared by the majority of the educational community and groups representing parents living in Totana in the face of the disturbing situation that the pandemic is creating today.
The Mayor said that the local council has made an "important effort" throughout the summer to prepare security measures in educational centers but also understands that the advisable thing, at this moment, is to postpone or stagger the incorporation of schoolchildren to prevent contagion from worsening with the opening of schools and institutes.
He requests that children be permitted to delay a return to school or work under the same conditions as those in the municipalities of Jumilla and district of Archivel in Caravaca de la Cruz, both of which are in confinement, and will offer classes online until they leave confinement.
The mayor reiterates that the situation of the health centers of Totana is "overwhelmed" and there is no possibilityof extending the number of prefessional; he appeals for individual responsibility to stop this epidemiological situation, insisting on the need to become aware of the situation and comply with the recommendations for prevention and social and health self-protection.
