ARCHIVED - 2020 Barcelona Marathon to go ahead in virtual format and free of charge due to Covid
Athletes from anywhere in the world are invited to complete the distance in their own time between 8th and 15th November
The 2020 Barcelona Marathon, which was officially cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic in August, is to take place after all in “virtual” form between 8th and 15th November, the Town Hall has announced.
Those wishing to take part can do so without paying any registration fee and will be permitted to complete the 42.195 kilometres anywhere in the world, either individually or as part of a relay effort. The event will last a full week in order to enable runners to take part at their own convenience and to complete the distance in stages if they wish.
City councillor David Escudé explains that the city has made a point of not abandoning the marathon, which has been held every year since 1980, and that athletes can register for the “virtual” version this year and set their own “solidarity challenge” at www.zurichmaratobarcelona.es . In this way they can raise funds for the charity cause of their choice, and all of those who complete the distance can opt to receive personalized commemorative solidarity medals.
The cost of each medal is 5 euros, with 20 per cent of the funds raised in this way being donated to organizations involved in coronavirus research.
Initially this year’s Barcelona Marathon was postponed to 25th October 2020 due to Covid-19 before the “real” event was eventually scrapped, but next year’s edition will be held on 7th November 2021.
Likewise, the Half Marathon, prelude to the Marathon, has also been moved from its original date in February to 17th October 2021.
Those who had originally registered for the 2020 Marathon were given three options: to change their registrations to the 2021 edition, to obtain a refund of 75% of the registration costs with a voluntary 25% donation to show solidarity or to obtain a 100% refund.
