ARCHIVED - 2021 wildfire prevention and detection campaign begins in Murcia
500 staff are involved in the 2021 Infomur operation on a daily basis
The annual Infomur operation to prevent, detect and extinguish forest fires during the summer in the Region of Murcia comes into force on Tuesday 1st June with immaculate timing as the prevalence of thunderstorms throughout the Region brings with it the threat of fire in the undergrowth of rural and mountainous areas.
The Protección Civil campaign, which lasts until the end of September, was officially launched on Monday, and will include vigilance by 34 pairs of volunteer monitors in woodland areas, operating in 32 of the 45 municipalities of Murcia. This represents a modest increase of four in the active personnel taking part in the scheme, and at the same time the duration of the operation has been lengthened by a month.
During the summer a total of 500 staff will be involved on a daily basis in an effort to minimize the damage caused by wildfires this year, with the monitors in permanent contact with the 112 emergency services coordination line. There are also 20 fixed monitoring stations located in the mountains and countryside of Murcia and a helicopter based in the Sierra de la Pila in the municipality of Abarán.
In addition, three forestry brigades equipped with helicopters are based in Alcantarilla, Sierra de la Pila and Zarcilla de Ramos (Lorca) and the Ministry of Agriculture helicopter in Caravaca de la Cruz can also be brought into service.
Ground-based forestry brigades are located in Blanca, Cieza, Ricote, Jumilla, Yecla, Mazarrón, Zarcilla de Ramos, Cartagena, Lorca, Alhama de Murcia, Murcia, Totana, Mula, Fortuna, Moratalla, Calasparra, Cehegín, Caravaca de la Cruz and El Sabinar (Moratalla), and four rapid intervention brigades are established in Cieza, Mula, El Valle (Murcia) and Caravaca de la Cruz.
