ARCHIVED - Another sharp decline in incidence rate: Spain Covid update August 8
All of the important coronavirus indicators have taken another nosedive in Spain
Spain finally seems to be coming to grips with the seventh wave of the coronavirus pandemic, and although summer is now in full swing and the country has been inundated with tourists, the health situation continues to improve.
One of the most important factors, the cumulative incidence rate in people over 60 years, has been steadily declining and is moving very close to a ‘controlled’ state – for the moment, only Andalucia has reached this phase.
By region, Melilla has the highest rate in the country, almost at 900 cases, and 10 other communities are also at medium risk. Seven others remain at low risk.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 26,188 new cases of coronavirus on Friday August 5, of which 11,564 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,266,184.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen more than 80 points since the last report to stand at 395.83 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 475.95 infections registered last Wednesday.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 607.09 cases, followed by septuagenarians (406.46), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (277.93). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
In the past two weeks, a total of 48,758 positives have been registered in this age group.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 183 cases to 159, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalucia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (184.18 cases). Every region has now dropped below the 1,000-case threshold.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital admissions have seen another decrease, with just 393 patients being treated for serious conditions in Spain’s ICUs.
This Friday, 4.6% of all intensive care beds were occupied by Covid patients. Nine regions have moved into the low-risk category, while Madrid (8.6%), the Basque Country (7.8%) and Catalonia (7.2%) are the most saturated.
Since the last update, another 381 Covid-related fatalities have been recorded across Spain, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the pandemic to 111,094.
Vaccination data
As of August 8, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,135,358 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,253,485 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
According to the latest report published by Health, more than 25 million people, 54% of the Spanish population, already have the booster dose.
