ARCHIVED - 11th and 12th October, free visits to navy ships in Cartagena and military concert
A chance to tour Spanish navy ships or enjoy a military band concert in Cartagena
12th October is Spain’s National Day, and as is always the case in Cartagena, where there is a long naval and military tradition, the Navy are organizing numerous events which are free for members of the public on both Friday 11th and Saturday 12th.
It will be possible to visit the Arsenal, various Navy ships and view exhibitions of military material belonging not only to the navy but also to the army and the air force, as well as a concert in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento on Friday evening. The schedule for this year’s celebrations includes the following:
Friday 11th October
19.33: The Spanish flag will be ceremonially lowered at 19.33 to coincide with the setting of the sun on the Alfonso XII seafront in the port of Cartagena.
20.00: The band of the Tercio de Levante division perform in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, with this year’s performance dedicated to the memory of the Battle of Lepanto in 1751, in which the navy of the Ottoman Empire was convincingly defeated.
Saturday 12th October
10.30 and 12.00: Two guided tours of the Arsenal of Cartagena including the submarine base.
11.00 to 18.30: Visitors are welcome to come abroad the minesweeper “Duero” at the Alfonso XII dock and the maritime action vessel “Audaz” at the cruise ship dock.
11.00 to 18.30: An open-air exhibition on the seafront of the port including material belonging to the minesweeping division of the navy, the navy dive unit, the Special Naval Combat Force, the Academia General del Aire and the parachute division of the air force which is based in Alcantarilla.
12.00 and 18.00: Two 30-minute demonstrations by the canine unit of the Tercio de Levante infantry division, again on the seafront in the port.
At the same time, a navy information point will be staffed on the seafront from 11.00 to 18.30 on Saturday.
