ARCHIVED - 2,000-year-old Roman inscription added to the exhibits at Cartagena archaeological museum
The Lápida Numisius is named after a prominent Roman citizen of Carthago Nova
An inscription carved into stone in Latin which dates back around 2,000 years to the time of Roman rule in what is now the Region of Murcia has been delivered to the “Enrique Escudero de Castro” municipal archaeological museum in Cartagena, 14 years after it was discovered in an annex building at the monastery of San Ginés de la Jara.
Known as the “Lápida Numisius” the stone would have formed part of a larger inscription, and it bears the clearly legible name of Caius Numisius. Since it was found forming part of a wall in San Ginés de la Jara it has been cleaned and studied at the regional archaeological museum in Murcia, and it is now added to the Roman heritage on display in Cartagena, which was conquered by General Scipio Africanus from the Carthaginians in 209 BC.
Many of the Roman inscriptions found in what was once Carthago Nova bear the names of prominent individuals or families in the spheres of politics and commerce in the Cartagena of two millennia ago, and the Numisia family is known to have been present in the city from the middle of the 1st century BC until at least the 2nd century AD: their importance is reflected in the fact that one of the legions which take part in the Cartagineses y Romanos fiestas in late September every year is that of Gens Numisius.
As for Caius Numisius, it has been deduced that he must have owned an opulent rural villa on top of which the monastery of San Ginés was built in later centuries, with the construction workers taking advantage of the remains of the villa as they built sturdy walls to support the large structure.
