ARCHIVED - 400 schoolchildren walk to the Mar Menor to mark World Wetlands Day
Poems and songs for the lagoon on the beach in San Pedro del Pinatar
This Sunday 2nd March is World Wetlands Day, and to mark the occasion the following day 400 children will be walking from their schools in San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena to the beach of Villananitos in San Pedro.
Once there, at 10.00 they will be reciting poetry and singing songs dedicated to the Mar Menor, a gesture which comes in response to the series of misfortunes which befell the lagoon during 2019 and have left the marine environment more fragile than ever. Various local schools are taking part in the initiative, and at 10.30 the children will be forming a design on the sand in the shape of a giant “SOS” message, echoing the public campaign which succeeded in attracting over 50,000 people to a march and demonstration in Cartagena last autumn to demand measures to protect and regenerate the Mar Menor.
