ARCHIVED - 7th to 23rd February Los Belones; Annual stews route Ruta del Guiso de La Abuela
La Ruta del Guiso de la Abuela in Los Belones is a winter alternative to tapas routes!
The Costa Cálida generally enjoys a warm climate, but a hearty stew is also a welcome addition to the local gastronomic tradition and guisos, or stews are widely eaten at this time of year.
Guisos are a popular addition to any family diet during the winter months in the Region of Murcia, and each year the restaurants of Los Belones, on the coast of the Mar Menor in the municipality of Cartagena celebrate this tradition with a "tapas" route dedicated to the "stews that grandma makes", or Ruta del Guiso de la Abuela.
These are generally delicious and are an absolute, basic staple of Murcian cuisine and include many different ingredients, varying from meat and fowl to fish with lots of variations on beans and pulses.
The route also includes Asiático coffees, which are a warming blend of sweet coffee and other ingredients including Licor 43, a popular drink widely available in bars and cafés across Murcia which is perfect for warming cold fingers during the winter months.
Between 7th and 23rd February nine bars and restaurants in Los Belones (including two Indian restaurants with their own versions of this dish with a little added spice!) are offering tapa-sized samples of these dishes in the sixth edition of the annual “Ruta del Guiso de la Abuela y El Asiático”. Plates of traditional Murciano stews will be on offer at just 2.50€ a time including a drink, and for those who are truly getting into the spirit of Cartagena cuisine they can be accompanied by a typical “Asiático” coffee for a further 1.50€.
As in a normal tapas event of this kind a route map can be obtained from any of the establishments taking part, and all of those whose maps are stamped after consuming at least three Guisos or two Asiáticos will be able to vote for the best dish and the best Asiático served throughout the period A prize draw follows!.
