ARCHIVED - Cruise ship due to arrive in Cartagena from Italy cancelled
The Opera remains in port in Genova with passengers on board in quarantine
Three more cruise ships are still expected in Cartagena this month
The worries in Cartagena over the planned arrival of the “Ópera” cruise ship from Italy in the port on 18th March have been put to rest on Wednesday morning with the news that the visit has been cancelled due to all of the passengers on board having been confined to quarantine in the port of Genoa.
The information has been confirmed by the Port Authority of Cartagena after receiving notification from the Italian authorities as the measures imposed by the Italian government in an effort to halt the spread of the coronavirus epidemic take effect. It will doubtless come as a relief to many in the Costa Cálida who were concerned at the potential disembarkation of thousands of visitors arriving directly from a country which is effectively in lockdown for at least the next two weeks.
Another three cruise ships are currently scheduled to arrive in Cartagena during March, the first of them the German vessel “Boudicca” with 900 or so passengers on Friday. She is followed by the Marella Dream (1,700 passengers) on 21st March and the Ventura (3,700 passengers) on 24th March. The Port Authority explains that any specific public health measures implemented for these visits will be decided upon by the “Sanidad Exterior” department of the national government, although it will be up to the “Capitanía Marítima” authority in Cartagena to give or withhold permission to dock.
The first case of Covid-19 detected in Cartagena was reported on Tuesday of this week, concerning a student who had returned from Italy after travelling there as part of the “Erasmus” student exchange scheme.
