ARCHIVED - Glut of zebra crossings sends Cartagena backstreet viral on social media!
24 crossings in 800 metres in Calle Floridablanca in the Barrio del Peral
The modest street of Calle Floridablanca in the Barrio Peral district in the northern outskirts of the city of Cartagena has shot to nationwide fame over the last few days on account of the scarcely believable count of 24 zebra crossings distributed along its 800-metre length.
National television presented Andreu Buenafuente, well-known for his ironic and satirical take on current affairs, has mocked the excessive attention to pedestrian safety in his program “Late Motiv”, commenting that if each crossing were adorned with a verse of poetry, as is the case in some parts of Madrid, a walk along Calle Floridablanca would be the equivalent of at least two years of a degree in Spanish Literature!
It is indeed hard to understand such a large amount of paint being used on a narrow one-way street, and one image shown on the television shows only one person actually crossing from one side to the other – although carefully avoiding doing so in any of the marked areas.
Calle Floridablanca is unlikely to become a serious rival for the Roman Theatre Museum o r the tourist boat in attracting visitors to Cartagena, but for a certain kind of tourist with a penchant for eye-catching selfies it may well find itself on the list of things to see in the historic city!
