ARCHIVED - Hespérides research ship sets sails form Cartagena on a 7-month mission to the Antarctic
Support and supplies will be given to Spanish bases on Livingston Island and Deception Island
The Spanish navy’s oceanographic research ship “Hespérides” set sail from Cartagena on Wednesday on its 25th annual campaign in the Antarctic, and is not scheduled to return to its home port until 17th June 2020.
The Spanish Antarctic Campaign is a collaborative venture uniting both public and private research bodies within the framework of the State Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research Plan, with all of those taking part coordinated by the Spanish Polar Committee. This year’s voyage includes stops at the ports of Montevideo and Punta Arenas in Chile before the Hespérides sails to the South Shetlands to support the bases known as “Juan Carlos I” on Livingston Island and “Gabriel de Castilla” on Deception Island. This support will consist not only of helping investigators whose projects are to be carried out on land, but also of providing fuel and other supplies to the other ships and to the land bases.
13 projects are being carried out this Antarctic summer before the land bases are closed down again, and on the voyage back the Hespérides will call at the port of Río de Janeiro in Brazil before taking part in a study carried out in the Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone north of the Canary Islands in May and June. This will entail further stops in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Funchal (Madeira, Portugal), before her arrival in Cartagena on 17th June.
This mission also includes a solidarity campaign in Punta Arenas, in Chile, where the Hespérides will deliver food, books, classroom materials and clothes for children in need which have been donated by individuals, businesses and the navy in Cartagena.
