ARCHIVED - Seaweed piled up as a protective barrier at Playa de Galúa in La Manga!
Rather than clearing away the seaweed in winter Cartagena Town Hall experiments with using it constructively
In general the Town Halls of coastal municipalities devote a lot of effort to clearing the seaweed which accumulates on their beaches, but in Cartagena a rather different approach has been adopted concerning the large amount of seaweed and seagrass which washed up onto the shore at the Playa de Galúa in La Manga del Mar Menor during Storm Gloria approximately 10 days ago.
As an experimental measure the council department of Infrastructures and Coastline is piling the marine vegetation up along the shore on the Mediterranean side of La Manga in order to protect the sand against further episodes of high waves and bad weather, and according to councillor María Casajús this action is being undertaken on the recommendation of the organization which awards the coveted Blue Flags to quality beaches all over Spain (including Playa de Galúa). This is the first time the policy has been adopted in Cartagena, and Sra Casajús adds that in the off season the removal of seaweed and its transfer to waste dumps is not permitted.
The idea is that the beach will be protected from sand loss and erosion while the usual maintenance work is carried out, and while forming the seaweed barriers council workers have also been removing plastics and other rubbish from the sand.
