ARCHIVED - Sixteen irregular immigrants intercepted off Cartagena coast
All of the migrants were of Algerian origin
In spite of the re-opening of the migrant transit centres across Spain, the trickle of irregular immigrants attempting to reach Europe via the coast of Spain has continued in the last few days, although very few boats have been intercepted heading for Murcia, the majority of interceptions taking place off the Andalucian coastline (one man was intercepted in a kayak having apparently been at sea for 10 days, his companions all died trying to cross to Andalucía).
One boat was intercepted in Murcian waters on Wednesday in Cala Punta-La Solana, carrying thirteen men, two women and a minor, all of Algerian nationality and all apparently healthy.
Its occupants were subsequently transferred to the port of Escombreras, arriving at 2 in the morning.
Upon arrival at the port, the Covid-19 protocols were activated, all of the irregular migrants required to take a Covid-19 test; any testing positive will be hospitalised and their travelling companions quarantined.
