ARCHIVED - Christmas lighting ceremony and more in Cartagena: December 3
Ice skating, Christmas markets, musical performances and more are on offer in Cartagena this bank holiday
Cartagena is making a play to become the Christmas capital of the Region with over 250 festive activities planned throughout December and January.
The festivities kick off this Friday December 3, with the Christmas lighting ceremony at 6.30pm and the inauguration of the municipal Nativity scene at 7pm at the Plaza San Francisco. Also on Friday evening, the Cartagena port is sure to be a bustling hub of activity, as the Christmas market will be opening for the first time at 8.30pm and there will also be an ice skating rink, not to mention a food and drinks area and a musical performance by the local group The Red Velvets.
On the following day, Saturday December 4, there will be a charity concert at El Batel auditorium to raise funds for the Hospital de la Caridad. Musicians from the Symphonic Band of the Federation of Bands in the Region of Murcia and the Municipal Band of Madridejos de Toledo will be performing and tickets cost just 10 euros per person. The donations will go towards the Basilica de la Caridad, which is currently undergoing restoration.
Meanwhile, on Sunday December 5, the Town Hall has organised the first event of the ‘Local Music Circuit for Neighbourhoods’ starting at 12pm (noon) at the church in Cabo de Palos (Parroquia de Santa María), with more performances to follow throughout December in Santa Lucía, El Algar, Los Dolores and La Palma.
In addition, all of the museums in Cartagena are going to remain open throughout the bank holiday weekend (December 3 to 8), meaning that visitors can enjoy a trip to Roman Theatre Museum, the Roman Forum, the Civil War Refuge Museum, the Punic Wall, the Panoramic elevator and more.
There are also some guided tours of the Roman Theatre Museum available, complete with a tapas tasting of some traditional historic dishes, for more information about the tours click here.
