Dangerous San Juan bonfire shut down in Cartagena due to wildfire risk
Firefighters inspected around 30 bonfire sites across Cartagena during the festivities
A bonfire in Cartagena was shut down on Noche de San Juan after officials deemed it unsafe due to its location near overgrown land and a recycling facility, as authorities stepped up inspections ahead of the annual celebrations.
The structure, located in Los Martínez between the La Guía road and La Aljorra, was removed on Tuesday June 23 after firefighters identified a wildfire risk linked to nearby weeds and surrounding materials.
Officers were out in force across the municipality in an effort to prevent incidents during San Juan Night, when bonfires and fireworks are traditionally set off in large numbers.
Firefighters and municipal workers have been inspecting bonfire sites since last week, with around 30 checked across Cartagena. In many cases, teams removed hazardous items, lowered bonfire structures, relocated them away from buildings or eliminated materials considered unsafe to burn.
Emergency services have been supported by a broad response network including ambulances, rapid intervention vehicles and coastal patrol units equipped with boats and jet skis to respond to incidents along the shoreline.
Police also increased surveillance using drones alongside specialist public safety units, with extra attention focused on coastal areas, neighbourhoods and outlying districts.
Ahead of the celebrations, the Councillor for Citizen Security confirmed that the municipal emergency plan had been activated in a pre-emergency phase to improve coordination between different services involved in prevention and response.
As an additional measure, parks with fencing, including La Rambla and La Rosa, were closed from 7pm on June 23, while waste management teams removed containers and dampened recycling bins to reduce fire risk during the festivities.
