ARCHIVED - Facelift for the enormous Muralla de Carlos III opposite Cartagena cruise ship dock
This emblematic wall is a striking first impression of this historical city for visitors arriving by sea
The Department of Archaeological Heritage in Cartagena is busy undertaking spring cleaning and clearing works of the Wall of Carlos III (Muralla del Mar), as part of a 268,000 euro contract awarded a month ago to the company Patrimonio Inteligente SL.
The contract includes the preventive maintenance and restoration of the archaeological sites and includes actions in the Roman Colonnade of the Morería Baja, the Molinete Archaeological Park, the exterior of the Roman Amphitheater (southern sector in front of the Hospital de Marina and the Autopsy Pavilion), the Byzantine Wall, the Roman roads (Cardo del Bulevar José Hierro, Calzada de la Plaza Cronista Isidoro Valverde and Decumano Máximo in Plaza del Lago), the funerary monument of Torre Ciega, the Paleo-Christian necropolis from the Municipal Archaeological Museum and the Wall of Carlos III, where the cleaning work is already underway.
This huge wall is the first monument visible to those arriving in the city by sea and is a striking view from the decks of incoming cruise ships. Although the covid pandemic has currently paralysed the visits of cruise ship visitors, maintaining the monuments is a task that can´t wait until the pandemic is under control.
