The 2021 Los Mayos fiestas in Alhama de Murcia went ahead this year in a limited fashion due to the on-going pandemic, with the Corremayos events suspended and fewer concerts and other entertainments marking the start of May, but the Mayos themselves were on display in parks, squares and gardens and one of the winning tableaux was a typically ironic take on the state of one of the roads in the municipality.
Complaints about the condition of the RM-515, which runs north from Alhama via Gebas and El Berro to Pliego, have been frequent for a number of years now, and although Covid-19 and the disruptions the pandemic has brought to daily life were the subject of a great many Mayos the most “critical” scene was adjudged to be the one created by the negihbours’ association of Gebas on Avenida Sierra Espuña.
The 500-euro main first prize was won by the “Pasajeros al Tren” group, who set up their Mayo in Plaza de las Américas.
