Legendary Mazarrón restaurant to be demolished
The iconic Miramar restaurant will stand no more on the beach of La Isla in Puerto de Mazarrón
On the morning of Monday October 7, the eviction work began on the historic Miramar restaurant in Mazarrón. The establishment has long been a reference point for local gastronomy on the beach of La Isla in Puerto de Mazarrón.
The current owners have stated that they are unable to defend their premises as they have been unable to access the relevant channels within the administration to help keep the restaurant alive.
Furthermore, the owners claim that they had not received any notification from the Costas Coastal Demarcation authority about their plans to demolish the restaurant. Vitcor Coca, the owner, said he feels “abandoned” since the business is a source of income for his family and for the employees who work in the establishment.
Costas, however, point out that steps have been taken, as far back as 2017, to speak with the owners and tell them when the removal of the facilities were due to happen.
At the start of the demolition work, numerous customers and locals were present to express their deep regret at the imminent destruction of the premises.
Opened by Andrés Durán and Catalina Granados in the 1960s, the Durán family ran the legendary restaurant until 1995, when the current owners took over the business.
The restaurant became an institution along the entire coast for its traditional cuisine based on good local produce, and this earned it the title of the first restaurant to be awarded the Medal of Tourist Merit.
Famous Spanish celebrities such as Julio Iglesias, Rocío Jurado, Lola Flores, Jesús Hermida, Miguel Ríos, Alejandro Sanz, among many others, have all visited Miramar.
