ARCHIVED - More than 1500 new Covid cases in Spain diagnosed on last day of July
The "actual total" of new cases reported by the autonomous regions exceeds 3,000 for today
July draws to a close with rising numbers of both Covid cases and outbreaks across Spain, although the Ministry of Health maintains that this is due to a considerable number of mild and asymptomatic cases being detected because of the increased level of testing which was not available when the pandemiuc first broke in Spain earlier this year.
Spain concluded the month recording the highest number of new cases since April 27th, breaking the 1500 banner for the first time since that date.
Today the national Health Ministry announced the diagnosis of 1525 new cases in the last 24 hours.
The word diagnosis is important as the national daily figures never accurately match the figures reported by the WHO or Worldometre which are gathered from the figures published daily by each of Spain’s 17 Autonomous health authorities and are “reported” on a day by day basis. These are always considerably higher than the figures reported by the central Ministry as the date of diagnosis must be checked and details verified before cases are admitted into the national totals. Cases which weren’t actually diagnosed within the last 24 hours and are often included in the regional figures tend to appear in the overall total at some point, so the figures do balance out, albeit in a fashion which is difficult to report accurately.
The way that the Spanish media tend to arrive at the actual number of new cases is to take the final total reported and subtract it from the final total reported on the previous day, which tends to generally give a figure very close to that obtained by adding up the figures from each of the regional health authorities.
Following that process today brings the “actual total” of new cases in the last 24 hours up to 3,092 and the overall total of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 288,522 cases.
There are now over 500 reported outbreaks across Spain (an outbreak is classed as 3 cases or more related to a specific case; most of the outbreaks are around 10 cases or less)
Aragón, in particular the Zaragoza area where the virus is still considered to be out of control, recorded 511 cases in the last 24 hours, followed by the Region of Madrid with 372 new cases. This is the new outbreak most worrying the health authority as there have been new cases in carehomes, in a region that up until a few days ago, appeared to have the virus under control.
These two regions alone account for 57% of all the new positives, but there is good news in that the figures in Catalonia are starting to improve, and the number of new cases is showing a sustained fall this week. Today Catalonia notified only 64 new cases, the lowest figure since the beginning of July when the outbreaks amongst the agricultural sector first began.
Of the 1,525 new infections, 107 have occurred in Andalusia, 511 in Aragon, 21 in Asturias, 22 in the Balearic Islands, six in the Canary Islands, 14 in Cantabria, 33 in Castilla-La Mancha, 42 in Castilla y León, 64 in Catalonia, 42 in the Valencian Community, 22 in Extremadura, 33 in Galicia, 372 in Madrid, three in Melilla, 22 in Murcia, 48 in Navarra, 158 in the Basque Country and five in La Rioja.

In the last seven days, 10 people have died (two in Castilla and Léon, four in Catalonia, three in the Valencian Community, one in Extremadura and two in Madrid), bringing the accumulated total to 28,443.
There is nowhere to hide from the figures being published at the moment and the rapid worsening of the national epidemiological situation can be seen most clearly in the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Today the number of cases diagnosed in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants reached 57.46, double that of 10 days ago but 700% more than at the end of June when figures had fallen back to their lowest point as lockdown proved an effective weapon against the virus.
However, the country is paying a heavy price for this decision and is facing significant pressure to focus on improving its track and trace facilities to avoid the need for further lockdowns.
Today Eurostat published European GDP figures for April-June, confirming that Spain has been one of the worst-hit countries economically due to the strict lockdown; its economy shrank by 18.5% in the April-to-June period, having already fallen by 5.2% in the first three months of the year.
