ARCHIVED - Murcia city council demolishes walls of the old jail to create cultural centre
1 million euros will convert La Carcel Vieja into a usable space following 39 years of disuse
Finally, after years of discussion and evaluating projects, the first of the external walls surrounding the former prison in Murcia City, was demolished on Tuesday, as the prison building prepares for a new life as a cultural venue.
The building of the old Murcia Provincial Prison has been closed for 39 years, was built in the early 20th century, inaugurated in June 1929 and closed in 1981.
In total, five walls will be demolished: the side wall facing the Hospital de La Vega, and another four interior walls that face the patios of the Old Prison.
With a 12-month execution period and a budget of 1.9 million euros, the recovery of the building of the former Provincial Prison of Murcia, “will become a bright, open and participative space, respectful of the past and projecting towards the future to return to Murcia what is theirs, "said Mayor," José Ballesta, who watched the machinery swing into action and the first wall crumble.
The next step for the building will consist of removing and saving the rubble from all the interior areas, as much of it will be reused within the refurbishment works of the new centre.
More than 50% of the 1 million euro budget has been financed through the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER) 2014-2020.
In addition to the recovery of the main building, which will cover 1,322 m2, and its adaptation for uses of a social, cultural and recreational nature (with an exhibition hall, conference room, etc.), landscaped outdoor spaces will be created and new pedestrian accesses will be opened around the property as well as a bike path.
The works will take around one year to complete.
