ARCHIVED - New 1km promenade to link La Gola and El Galua in La Manga
Cartagena has applied for 5 million euros from the EU to build the new seafront promenade
The City Council of Cartagena has submitted a proposal for European funding in order to build a new promenade in La Manga that will link the Gola de Marchamalo with El Galúa by means of a pedestrian walkway.
The proposed prom will run along the seafront for a distance of one kilometre, and is valued at 5 million euros, funds which Cartagena City Council hopes to receive from Europe.
Plans for the building work would involve the integration of the sewage network, which was built under the beach, into the structure of the promenade.
Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, said, “The proposal means improving the offer for tourists and residents with a large promenade area by the sea and will allow the sewage network to be moved away from the bathing area, modernising it and minimising any risk to the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor.”
This is not the first time Cartagena has participated in previous calls for project proposals in Europe. The first time, they obtained more than 4.1 million euros to promote and develop projects in the Torres Park, the mouth of Cabo de Palos and the San Leandro battery. The second application is still in the evaluation phase, which is a project they have developed with the molinete.
They have decided to apply for European funding for this latest project under the Tourism Sustainability Destinations Plan because 100% of the project would be financed by the EU, and it needs a substantial investment.
