ARCHIVED - Redundancies ahead at the luxury La Manga Club Resort
Hesperia has announced that some of its 400 employees will pass from the ERTE temporary redundancies plan to a full ERE redundancy situation
It’s now more than a year since the Covid-19 pandemic first started to make its presence felt in Spain and during that time thousands of jobs have been placed in jeopardy by the economic fall-out of the enforced covid restrictions.
The worst-hit sectors are those related to travel, tourism, hotels and hostelry, although many associated businesses right the way down through the supply chain, reaching even as far as the shepherds who normally sell their lambs to catering suppliers and the laundry companies who launder table cloths and bed linen are equally badly affected.
For many smaller concerns, which have limited staffing commitments and are able to find ways of saving money and cutting costs, survival means lower income and a lot of sacrifices, but not total disaster, but for larger concerns with high staffing overheads, survival is complex and the total ban on leisure travelling disastrous.
Timing could have been better for the Inversor Hesperia group (GIHSA) who bought a controlling stake (more than 50%) of the La Manga Club tourist complex from the Arum Group in 2019, which until then had belonged to Inmogolf and aimed to turn the complex into "the best holiday and leisure resort in southern Europe".
Covid struck at the beginning of 2020, forcing the main facilities, including the 5-star Príncipe Felipe hotel to close and since then most of the complex employees have been furloughed on the temporary regulation file (ERTE) scheme, which aims to try and maintain skilled employees rather than a company being forced to make them permanently redundant.
Today it has been announced that the company will now make some of its 400 staff permanently redundant and has called union representatives to begin negotiations next Thursday.
Hesperia maintains that the redundancies are related to the re-structuring and streamlining of the facilities rather than Covid, but at the moment no indication of how many employees will be affected has been given, nor the specific activity sectors affected.
Representatives of both the hospitality and sports facilities committees, have been summoned for next Thursday.
Most of the staff are currently furloughed, with just a few continuing to work in order to maintain the tourist and sporting facilities.
This huge luxury complex covers 560 hectares, and includes a five-star hotel, 200 apartments, 15 bars and restaurants, three golf courses, a tennis center and eight football fields used by international teams for training.
