San Pedro del Pinatar steps up tiger mosquito control efforts

A dedicated company will periodically spray public roads, parks and gardens in San Pedro del Pinatar

As the temperatures start warming up and the wet spells continue, San Pedro del Pinatar has stepped up efforts to combat the tiger mosquito population. The initiative, launched by the Health Department, should control the proliferation of these pests by regularly scheduling treatments throughout the municipality.

Belmonte Higiene Ambiental, the company responsible for the town's Pest Control Service, has intensified its work over the last few weeks, spraying grates, gutters and other places mosquitoes breed on public roads and streets. Efforts have also been focused on parks and public gardens, which are known to harbour adult populations of this insect.

Sampling traps have been placed as part of the regional entomological network for tiger mosquitoes, with checks taking place every two weeks from April to December. The data gathered is sent to the University of Murcia and the Ministry of Health for analysis, contributing to a study that tracks mosquito populations and helps optimise future treatments. San Pedro Town Council has been actively involved in this study for several years.

As well as treating roads, gardens and paths, the council is working on educating the public on the importance of following prevention guidelines, as private properties account for 80% of tiger mosquito outbreaks.

With more rain and higher temperatures on the horizon, the importance of civic responsibility is highlighted, encouraging residents to remove small pools of water, flower pot saucers and ponds from their properties, as these are prime breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. Additionally, proper maintenance of swimming pools and regular cleaning of gutters on roofs and terraces is essential to help prevent the spread of mosquitoes.
