ARCHIVED - Spanish cabinet approves the purchase of 31 million coronavirus vaccine doses
Two AstraZeneca doses per patient at a total cost of 5.90 euros
Approval was given on Tuesday by the Cabinet of the Spanish government for the purchase of over 31 million doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine which is currently in the third phase of testing.
The AstraZeneca vaccine was created by researchers at Oxford University and is being produced by the Cambridge-based firm, with expectations having been raised that mass vaccination programs could be launched as soon as December this year if testing continues to provide evidence of its effectiveness and safety. On 27th August the EU signed a contract to purchase over 300 million doses of the product, and the number assigned to Spain on a proportional basis calculated by population is precisely 31,555,469 million.
Of course the vaccine comes at a cost, and the contract states that each dose is being acquired at 2.90 euros: the EU is subsidizing just under half of that amount, but with Spain’s costs still amounting to 1.78 euros per dose the total expense for the country will come in at 56 million euros.
At a more easily comprehensible level, the total cost per patient is 5.80 euros due to the fact that two doses of the vaccine are required in order for it to be effective, so the Spanish government’s expense per person vaccinated amounts to 3.56 euros. However, both these figures and the overall numbers could rise if AstraZeneca are able to show that increased production costs have been incurred during the development and testing phases of the vaccine.
The first 3.1 million doses could be arriving in Spain in December, providing there are no further hitches in the trials.
