ARCHIVED - Spanish food safety agency warns young children and pregnant women not to eat tuna
The warning also includes swordfish due to the high mercury content in these species
The Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency Aesan, which is a part of the Ministry of Health, has issued a recommendation that pregnant women, women who are breastfeeding and children under the age of 10 should not eat fish which have a high mercury content, such as tuna, pike and swordfish, due to concerns over the effects on their health.
In consequence school lunch menus are likely to be reviewed, and the warning also specifies that the consumption of such foodstuffs should be limited to 120 grams per week for children aged between 10 and 14.
Aesan explain that the toxicity of mercury depends on its exact chemical composition, the amount to which people are exposed and the age of consumers, and that in its organic form it is highly toxic and can cross the hemato-encephalic barrier and the placenta, bringing about alterations in the neuronal development of foetuses and young children.
