ARCHIVED - The hail and tornado in Murcia this week caused 16m euros of damage
Orchards growing apricots, lemons, peaches, almonds and nectarines in Murcia have been badly affected by the weather
The hailstorms, tornado and deluges of rain this week have caused losses amounting to 16 million euros, according to a statement by the Minister for Agriculture of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Luengo.
The most affected regions are Río Mula, the Altiplano and the northwestern part of Murcia, while the most damaged crops are apricots, lemons, peaches, almonds and nectarines. In addition, there has been damage to trees, “which will affect future harvests”.
The regional government has already promised farmers that they will cover the costs of any phytosanitary treatments that they have to carry out to recover their plantations.
In the meantime, however, the Region will lose some of its projected economic income, and it is likely that fruit will become more expensive in supermarkets for end consumers, even as most produce is becoming more costly anyway.
Thankfully, the most recent weather forecast suggests that temperatures are due to rise as we go into next week, and it will be clear and sunny for at least the next seven days.
This is little consolation to farmers, though, as their crops will still be spoilt for this season, and possibly beyond. What’s more, drastic changes in temperature and climate can be worse for plants and crops, and it remains to be seen what the rest of the spring holds for Murcia’s growers.
