ARCHIVED - Thousands demand action to save the Mar Menor at Murcia march
Demonstrators also call for flood prevention measures along the coast of the lagoon
Thousands of people gathered in the city of Murcia on Thursday evening to demand urgent measures to save the marine environment of the Mar Menor in a protest march which, in stark contrast to those which have taken place in Catalunya this week, was peaceful and good-natured despite the strength of feeling and resentment at the regional government among many of the participants feel.
This march was called before the scale of the crisis in the Mar Menor was underlined by the appearance of tens of thousands of dead fish and crustaceans on the beaches of the lagoon last weekend, and as well as measures to protect the lagoon many of the demonstrators were demanding solutions to the problem of flooding in towns along the shore every time that there is heavy rain. During the gota fría storm of mid-September the towns of Los Alcázares, San Javier, Torre Pacheco and Los Nietos were among those worst affected by the floods, and the Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Cervera, joined a large contingent from the town at the start of the march outside the Palacio de San Esteban (the home of the regional government).
Some of the placards and banners expressed simple demands such as “stop the floods” or the slogan of the march, “SOS Mar Menor”, while others protested at the Mar Menor being used as “the sewer of the Region” or pleaded for the authorities to “Let the fish live”. Still more, though, were vitriolic in their criticism of the regional and national governments, perceiving a lack of willingness to take action on their part – as one banner read, the one constant demand was for “more action and fewer committees”.
Also taking part in the march were various ecological and naturalists’ associations and the fishermen of San Pedro del Pinatar, sporting black t-shirts in memory of the fish which were wiped out last weekend and accompanied by their families, worried about their future livelihoods.
Another major demonstration is planned on 30th October in Cartagena, starting at 18.00 in the Plaza de España.
