ARCHIVED - VIDEO New Spanish S-81 submarine reaches water at last in Cartagena
The S-81 Isaac Peral will undergo extensive testing before the final handover date in 2023
Although the official launching ceremony of the Spanish navy’s new S-81 “Isaac Peral” submarine took place on 22nd April it was not until last Friday that the boat finally hit the water for the first time at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, and the next step is now for pierside trials to be conducted, including the loading of diesel oil, the charging of the batteries and a pierside propulsion test.
The first of the new S-80 class submarines was placed in a floating dock on Wednesday and lowered into the water on Friday by a process of flooding its ballasts while Navantia and crew personnel carried out various safety checks inside the ship. The Isaac Peral was then removed from the interior of the dock and transferred to the fitting dock.
Sea trials of the Isaac Peral are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022 and it will then be another year before it is finally handed over to the Spanish Navy.
Following a re-design during construction, the S-80 class measures 80.8 metres in length and 7.3 metres in diameter and has a submerged displacement of around 3,000 tonnes. Among the features are an integrated combat system and platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas, as well as BEST-AIP, an atmosphere-independent propulsion system, which supplies the ship with electrical power at any depth so that it can remain underwater for longer periods.
The renovation of the navy’s submarine fleet with four S-80 craft has so far taken approximately 20 years and required an investment of almost 4,000 million euros. The other three of the new fleet will be handed over to the navy progressively between now and February 2028, according to the latest projections.
