ARCHIVED - Work begins on Las Dunas de Cabo de Palos commercial centre
The first phase of remodelling the Cartagena shopping centre should take around five months
Following months of frustrating delays, building work has finally begun on the new shopping centre at Las Dunas de Cabo de Palos. This first phase, which should take between four and five months, involves the demolition of the 10,000m2 basement of the old building as well as three more abandoned premises, while maintaining the outer walls of the structures.
The second phase, scheduled for after the summer, will concern the complete renovation of the urbanisation and at the end of November or the beginning of December, the construction of the shopping centre itself will begin. The surrounding streets will also be repaired.
According to one of the backers, José García, the new facilities will feature “the largest Mercadona in Spain, with a store area of 5,000m2, 14,000m2 of parking, of which 10,000m2 will be underground, and it will be able to create some 500 jobs”.
In the rest of the building, “stores of different sizes will be located, mostly multinational chains, which will be located in existing premises and in others that are newly built,” Mr García detailed.
The initial approval for this project was actually authorised in October 2019 and, after receiving a favourable technical report, legal doubts arose about whether the project could go ahead because of the Law for the Recovery and Protection of the Mar Menor.
However, the much anticipated shopping centre eventually got the green light on January 24.
“We have been advancing more slowly than we would have liked due to the legislative doubts that arose, but, at last, the machines are already working,” said the Deputy Mayor and Town Planning Councillor of Cartagena, Ana Belen Castejón.
“Residents and businessmen have been demanding for a long time that the shopping centre be rehabilitated so that this area can be reactivated and because its poor condition was very dangerous. These works are a fundamental step for the request to become a reality,” she added.
As well as the Mercadona, the shopping centre will have a total area of 64,000m2 containing 250 shops, a chain of perfumeries and a fast food restaurant.
