ARCHIVED - Works to install new bridge in Torre Pacheco by RADAR
The council continues to work on projects to minimise the risk of future flooding
The 2019 Gota Fría totally flooded large swathes of Torre Pacheco, the rambla and water removal network incapable of absorbing the huge volume of water which fell during this historic weather event, but with global warming threatening to bring more torrential rains to Spain in the future, adapating the water defences in areas which could potentially be affected again in the future is a priority for the municipalities vulnerable to this type of weather event.
The Ayuntamiento de Torre Pacheco has been immersed in a major overhaul of its defenses since this occurred and is undertaking a substantial programme of modifications to existing structures and construction of new infrastructure to cope with any future downpours of this magnitude.
One of the many elements involved in the programme is the construction of two new bridges by the RADAR centre linked to the elevation of the level of Avda. de Balsicas to protect the San Antonio neighborhood against floods, which is included within the Plan de Obras y Servicios de Torre Pacheco for 2021.
This is part of the project to adapt the old military installations of the former Naval Radio Station that was in operation between 1960 and 2000, but which was acquired by the Council in 2002 for the creation of the RADAR Centre ( to be used for sports, open air and recreational activities) with an area of 100,000 m2, where an athletics track, a festive venue and an access roundabout have already been built.
The mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León accompanied by technical officer Antonio Roca, Técnico from the urban planning department, visited the site alongside the RADAR this week to watch the first section being installed.
